Valet suits events where guests arrive in a short window, the lot is tight, or the entrance sits far from parking. Self-parking suits long events with staggered arrivals and ample space. Neither removes the venue accessible parking obligations under the ADA Standards, which are scoped to the lot itself.

The capacity claim, and why we will not repeat it

Search for whether valet fits more cars into a lot and you will find confident percentages everywhere. Valet stacking increases capacity by 20 to 40 percent, says one operator. Another says 10 to 15 percent. A third says 40 to 60 percent. Every one of those figures is published by a company that sells valet, and not one of them cites research.

We are not going to add a fourth number to that pile. What is actually true is the mechanism, not the magnitude: stacked cars do not each need independent aisle access, so a valet operation can use ground a self-park layout has to leave empty. How much ground that frees depends entirely on the shape of your lot, how many cars deep the stack runs, and whether attendants can retrieve without shuffling. Anyone quoting you a percentage before seeing your site is quoting a brochure.

When valet is the right answer

Valet earns its cost under three conditions, and they compound:

  • Arrivals compress. Weddings, ceremonies, and seated dinners put every guest at the door inside a short window. Self-parking turns that window into a queue on the road.
  • The lot is tight or awkward. If a guest cannot work out where to go within a few seconds of arriving, you have a traffic problem that signage will not fix.
  • The walk is long. Distance that reads as trivial on a site plan reads differently in formal clothes, in February, in Indiana.

When self-parking is the right answer

Self-parking works when arrivals and departures spread across a wide window, the lot is large enough that finding a space is genuinely easy, and the entrance is close. Under those conditions valet adds cost without solving a problem your guests actually have. An operator worth hiring will tell you this rather than sell you valet anyway.

What does not change either way

Accessible parking obligations attach to the parking facility, not to the parking method. The ADA Standards, written by the US Access Board, scope the required count to each facility and scale it with size: two accessible spaces for a 26 to 50 space lot, four for 76 to 100, seven for 201 to 300. The Standards also require that “at least one of every 6 accessible spaces, or fraction of 6, in each parking facility must be sized to accommodate vans.”

Choosing valet does not discharge that duty, and neither does choosing self-parking. Establish with the venue who owns it.

Sizing either option

Both decisions start from the same number: how many vehicles arrive. The Federal Highway Administration’s 2022 National Household Travel Survey measured social and recreational vehicle occupancy at 1.99 people, down from 2.10 in 2017, with a margin of error of 0.19. Dividing your guest count by roughly two gives a working vehicle estimate. That division is our arithmetic applied to the survey figure, not a finding of the survey.

Occupancy has been falling. The survey reports a decline across every trip purpose between 2017 and 2022 and states that “considering the associated MOEs, these differences are statistically significant.” For a venue, a falling occupancy rate means the same guest list arrives in more cars than it used to, which is the quiet reason lots that used to cope no longer do.
